John Wayne

John Wayne, born Marion Robert Morrison (1907-1979), was an iconic American actor known for his roles in Western and war movies. He gained fame during Hollywood’s Golden Age and appeared in 179 film and television productions. Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa, but grew up in Southern California. After a football injury cost him his scholarship to the University of Southern California, he started working for the Fox Film Corporation.

Although Wayne began with small roles, his breakthrough came with John Ford’s “Stagecoach” (1939), which propelled him to stardom. He became known for portraying rugged, heroic characters, embodying the nation’s frontier heritage. Wayne’s notable Western roles include “Red River” (1948), “The Searchers” (1956), “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962), and “True Grit” (1969), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Outside of Westerns, Wayne starred in films like “The Quiet Man” (1952), “Rio Bravo” (1959), and “The Longest Day” (1962). His final role was in “The Shootist” (1976), where he played an aging gunfighter battling cancer. Wayne’s legacy extends beyond his filmography; he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1980, and in 1999, the American Film Institute recognized him as one of the greatest male stars of classic American cinema.
